Ancient Mysteries: Lost Castles of England, currently on Netflix Instant:
When most people imagine England’s colorful past, they envision queens, knights and grand castles made of stone. But the truth is, most lords and ladies of the Middle Ages lived in vast structures made of wood, buildings that have since rotted away. This fascinating installment of “Ancient Mysteries” reconstructs the former splendor of these lost castles of a bygone era and explores their scant remains via the earthen mounds they left behind.
I’ve watched about half of it so far, and it’s a fairly informative documentary. There aren’t many shows I’ve seen that address the fact that the majority of castles were constructed of wood during the first part of the medieval period. This documentary mainly focuses on the Normans building wooden castles across England after William the Conqueror’s victory at the Battle of Hastings.
