I’m currently reading A World Without End by Ken Follett, and his historical fiction novel is filled with medieval church architectural terms that I’m not readily familiar with, such as a clerestory or apse or chancel. I read Pillars of the Earth years ago, and some of the terms I remember from reading that novel — I had to look the terms up then too — but many I had forgotten. So I was doing some searching, and I came across a couple of sites that are glossaries of medieval church architectural terms.
Even with these definitions, it would be nice to have a visual reference to go with some of the terms. I did find a site about a year ago that showed diagrams of medieval cathedrals, and on the diagrams, there were points of reference showing where certain things were: the chancel is here, these are the clerestories, the apse is here, this is the transept, that sort of thing. But I forgot to add the site to my del.icio.us account, and now I can’t find it again. If anyone knows of a site that has visual references to go with with the terminology, please let me know. In the mean time, I’ll keep searching, and if I find it, I’ll post the link.
I need a diagram of cathedrals of the12th century,please
Jean,
Sorry for the delayed response due to the holidays. I do have general diagram posted here on my site: https://steventill.com/2008/10/03/medieval-history-terms-of-the-week-chancel-and-choir-quire/. Do you need something more detailed? If so, I will find you something.
