I ordered a few medieval history books online yesterday from Barnes & Noble authorized sellers. Unfortunately, these weren’t books I could just walk into the bookstore and physically look at since they are all used books, so I had to rely on reviews, and the reviews were pretty limited. Has anyone read any of these before:
Feudal Society, Volume I by Marc Bloch
The Medieval Reader by Norman Cantor
William the Conqueror by David Douglas
Harold: The Last Anglo-Saxon King by Ian Walker
I haven’t read any of those books, so can’t comment on them. *But* have you considered requesting those books from your local library? The library can get them for you through inter-library loan (ILL). It’s a great feature because it gives you access to participating public and university libraries throughout the country. This way, you get to preview books that you may want to purchase.
The David Douglas book is considered pretty much the “go-to” classic on its subject, though there have been more recent attempts which are decent.
Joan – Thanks for the tip. I will check with my local libraries.
Anne – Do you have other recommendations in addition to the Douglas book that would be good to read?
