HBO to Film Pilot of “A Song of Ice and Fire”

George R.R. Martin announced on his blog last week that HBO confirmed it will be filming the pilot of the fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire (A Game of Thrones being the first season). This is good news, but there are no guarantees the pilot will turn into a full television series. According to Martin, executive producers and script writers David Benioff and Dan Weiss have remained loyal to the novels. Supposedly, HBO was to issue a press release, but I checked their site and couldn’t find anything. If I run across it, I’ll post a link to it. Or if anyone else has seen it, can you send it my way? I’d like to read it.

  1. Constantly Dramatic — it’s hard to say. I haven’t had the chance to watch any of the other series on HBO, so I have nothing to base my opinion on. I would have liked to watch the series on Rome and the series on the Tudors. Have you seen any of those? If so, how would you rate the production values? Might be worth my while to get HBO just to check out the A Song of Ice and Fire series.

  2. Rome was excellent, as were so are many of the other HBO shows I’ve seen over the years. The problem is Rome was cancelled due to cost, which is a problem I’m sure “Fire” will have to be careful about as well. The Tudors is a Showtime show and it’s nowhere neare as good as Rome but I think that has more to do with a bad script than the production values.

  3. I didn’t realize the Tudors was a Showtime series. For some reason, I was thinking it was HBO. I can imagine the cost of ASOIF will be fairly high. I hope they can manage that well and the series will be a successful one.
